Cypriot Civil Society Strengthening Programme
The NGO Support Centre and its partners - The Management Centre of the Mediterranean and INTRAC, the International NGO Training and Research Centre based in Oxford - have undertaken an 18-month programme of support for the development of civil society across Cyprus, which began in January 2007 and was completed July 2008.
The programme aims were to contribute to:
- Strengthened role of civil society as a crucial actor in deepening citizen dialogue within and across communities and participation in decisions affecting the island’s development
- Strengthened, sustainable local capacity building support provision in Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities
There were four main components to the programme:

Long-term Capacity Building Support
The Programme worked with 15-20 organisations across Cyprus to support the development of their organisational capacity, beginning with capacity assessment and action planning, leading to implementation and review.
The Programme also convened a range of events – workshops, conferences, roundtables – to promote exchange of ideas and knowledge on a range of critical issues facing Cypriot civil society. Events drew together actors from within civil society and from other sectors to increase debate and informed decision-making.
- 637 participants were trained in 12 topics
- 132 CSOs received Technical Assistance
- 20 organisations received long term capacity building support
- 10 events on awareness raising and enabling environment for civil society
This programme was funded by UNDP-ACT in Cyprus, with support from USAID.
